January 2010 Itinerary
Day 1 - January 17
You are scheduled to arrive into the San Jose International Airport on the a flight TBD. After clearing immigration and customs, exit the airport and meet your driver. Board the bus for the 20 minute drive to San Jose and check into a Standard Room at Hotel Presidente. Enjoy Dinner at the hotel’s News Café. Overnight at Hotel Presidente.
Day 2 - January 18
At 6:00am, board the bus for your full day tour to Cartago, Guayabo Ruins and EARTH University. Start the drive East to Cartago, the first capital of Costa Rica. Guide will explain about the history of the area, the Irazu Volcano, what they will visit and explain the highlights of the route. At 7:30 am arrival in the city and tour of Downtown Cartago, cross the Ruins of Cartago, enjoy the legend of the Virgin de Los Angeles and visit the Basilica of the Virgin of Los Angeles in Cartago & Museum. At 8:30am continue to the Turrialba region. Arrive at Guayabo National Monument and enjoy the history of the pre-Colombian indigenous cultures, their rituals and tribal life. The hike will visit the aqueduct, review aspects of engineering and architecture and the site where the tribal leader (cacique) lived. At 11:00 am depature back to Turrialba and on to Siquirres. Drive past banana plantations and review the afro-Costa Rican culture and legends. At 12:30 pm arrive at EARTH University for lunch and a tour of the banana plantations. Upon conclusion board the van and return to the hotel. Free night. Overnight at Hotel Presidente.
Day 3 - January 19
Enjoy your breakfast. At 8:00am, board the van and start your city tour. It begins with driving west to the residential neighborhood of Rohrmoser, where the president resides. Will drive by the National Stadium (under construction, a donation of the Chinese government), and several government buildings. Up Paseo Colon a main avenue. Enjoy a view of downtown visiting the main Cathedral, National Theatre, Plaza de la Cultura, Gold Museum and National Museum. Lunch at Mi Tierra. Drive East towards the University of Costa Rica and the San Pedro neighborhood. Visit to University of Costa Rica, San Jose Lecture on Costa Rican history and culture by Dr. Ana Patricia Fumero. At 5:30 pm board the bus and drive back to the Hotel. Free night. At 7:00pm the bus will be waiting for you for your dinner outside to the hotel. Overnight at Hotel Presidente.
Day 4 - January 21
Early breakfast. At 7:00 am departure west on the Interamerican Highway, then north through the city of Alajuela. Drive by the statue and park in honor of Juan Santamaria, the National Hero. Arrive at the Poas Volcano at 8:00 am with a visit to the crater, and possible hike to the Botos Lagoon. At 11:00 am departure towards La Paz (15 minute drive). Visit the animal attractions (butterflies, frogs, snakes) and hike to two waterfalls. Lunch at the park. At 2:00 pm departure towards Sarchi. Shopping in town and explanation of the importance of town in the culture and crafts of the country. Free time for shopping. At 6:00 pm return to the hotel. At 7:00 pm board the bus and enjoy your dinner at Pueblo Antiguo.
Day 5 - January 22
Enjoy a leisure breakfast and check out. At 10:30am board the bus for your guided the transfer to the San Jose International Airport. Arrive and check into your flight home.
